Fact Check: Trump-Republican Agenda Harms Michigan
Vice President J.D. Vance is traveling to Howell, Michigan, today as part of the latest emergency rebranding effort by the Trump Administration to spin the consequences of a deeply unpopular Republican budget bill, the Trump tariffs, and the broader GOP economic agenda.
Vance is expected to spin the administration’s economic efforts as a tax cut and boost for Americans. But Michiganders know better. This summer’s GOP bill slashed health care funding for working families, raising prices at a time when costs are already soaring to give tax breaks to corporations and wealthy, well-connected Republican donors. Of course, the toxic legislation and the Trump economic agenda have the full and unconditional support of Republican senatorial candidate Mike Rogers.
But while Republicans like Rogers would love to change the subject, families are living with the fallout of these cuts:
-
Coverage on the chopping block: At least 200,000 Michiganders are on track to lose health care coverage because of Republicans like Mike Rogers, who backed the steep $1 trillion Medicaid cuts.
-
Providers sounding the alarm: Doctors and nurses across the state – including this morning – have warned the cuts will push patients out of coverage, clog hospitals, and drive up infections and ER delays.
-
Families squeezed: In January, premiums are set to spike by 20% as ACA premium tax credits expire, leaving families without options for affordable health care.
-
Rural hospitals face closure: Rural hospitals in Mount Pleasant, Carson City, and Dowagiac could shutter their doors because of the steep cuts.
-
Lost jobs: The U.S. manufacturing sector lost 12,000 jobs in August, according to the latest data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics – a dramatic drop off for an industry Michiganders rely on. One-in-five Michigan jobs are in the automotive supply chain.
-
Costs Increasing: Trump’s tariffs are driving up the costs of basic goods like clothing and food, making life more expensive for Michiganders
“The bottom line: prices are going up, affordable health care options are going down, and families are feeling the harsh realities of the Trump economic agenda. What’s striking is how Republicans like Vance and Rogers are completely out of touch with the reality they created. Instead of standing up for Michiganders feeling the squeeze from higher prices, they are focusing on giving tax breaks to billionaires and defending the corporations jacking up your costs,” said Senate Majority PAC Press Secretary Christyna Thompson.
The Vance visit comes as Americans are increasingly expressing their displeasure with the state of the economy. Specifically, voters are souring on Donald Trump’s tariffs, viewing the added costs as “reckless” policies hurting their personal economic situation, a Senate Majority PAC poll from earlier this month found.
Forty-eight percent of all voters say the Trump-Republican tariffs have worsened their personal economic situation, and 56 percent believe tariffs are damaging the economy. Among 2024 swing voters, the majority – 57 percent – believe the tariffs are hurting the economy overall.
Notably, a majority of voters overall characterize Trump as a “reckless leader” regarding tariffs.
