ICYMI: NEW YORK TIMES: Ted Cruz’s ‘Near Defeat’
The New York Times recently detailed Ted Cruz’s flailing re-election campaign, highlighting the increasing likelihood of Colin Allred defeating Cruz in November. Even Texas Republicans are starting to sound the alarm, with the head of the Travis County GOP warning in a letter to GOP state party leaders that the Texas Senate race is “too close for comfort” for Cruz’s re-election hopes.
The New York Times additionally provided a comprehensive breakdown of the Senate race in Texas.

- Local Texas resident Christopher Williams: “It’s going to be a fight, and I love a good fight.”
- “The current reality is that Texas is too close for comfort,” Matt Mackowiak, head of the Travis County Republican Party, said in a letter to state party leaders.
- Liz Cheney, the former Republican representative from Wyoming, supports Mr. Allred.
- Perhaps never has a race for Senate included so many mentions of Cancún, Mexico, where Mr. Cruz went vacationing during a 2021 winter storm in Texas that left more than 200 people dead. Mr. Allred finds ways to bring it up whenever possible, including in an ad about Social Security and Medicare
- Like many Democrats in 2024, Mr. Allred has made reproductive rights a central part of his campaign. He has also stressed his work on local projects, like getting a veterans hospital for the Dallas area . . .
- Cruz: “It is easier now to convince people that there is a real threat.”
- During his visit to the Houston barbershop, Mr. Allred spoke with Mr. Williams, the barber, describing his modest upbringing by a single mother and his determination to fight hard in the election. Mr. Williams appeared to be won over. “I wasn’t going to vote before y’all came,” Mr. Williams said to the candidate.
- “Hope! Hope! Hope!” Democrats echoed in unison.
“MAGA extremist Ted Cruz is clearly scared knowing that he has a real chance of losing re-election,” said SMP spokesperson Von Walker. “And this New York Times story serves as yet another reminder that all of Cruz’s worries are justified. Come November, Texans will remove Cruz from the Senate and elect Colin Allred, a starkly different candidate with a proven track record of delivering for Texans, who is laser-focused on the issues that matter most.”
