ICYMI: Michigan U.S. Senate Debate Recap – Rogers Turned His Back on Michigan
Last night, DC Dinosaur Mike Rogers faced sharp criticism for his MAGA voting record and walking away from Michigan and moving to Florida.
Throughout the debate, Rep. Elissa Slotkin showed Michiganders that she has the experience, knowledge, and common-sense needed to support hardworking families in her state. And along the way she proved exactly why Rogers is too out of touch to represent Michigan.
A key moment on the debate stage focused on Rogers’ absence from Michigan, while Michiganders fought to protect abortion rights and enshrine those protections into state law. Rogers was living the good life far away from Michigan in Florida.
And his voting record clearly showed where Rogers stood on the issue of abortion. Calling out Rogers for voting over 56 times to limit women’s access to reproductive care and 4 times to ban abortion nationwide, Slotkin said:
“Every single time he was casting one of those votes, he was saying something very particular. He was saying to women he does not trust you to make your own decisions about your own family planning every single time.”
Slotkin also went after Rogers record of voting to cut Social Security.
Another tense moment came during an exchange about Medicare and Social Security.
“He voted to raise the retirement age,” Slotkin said, referring to Rogers’ votes on conservative House budgets. “That’s in his record. It’s public. I’m not sure he remembers. He’s been down in Florida for a few years, but your record when you vote in Congress is public.”
To cap things off, Slotkin made very clear that the person standing next to her on stage wasn’t the same Mike Rogers voters had previously elected:
“The old Mike Rogers from 2014 wouldn’t be messing around when it comes to national security, but the Mike Rogers of 2024 seems happy to do it. I’m sad about that.”
“Yesterday’s debate reminded Michigan voters just how out-of-touch Mike Rogers is, as evidenced by his voting record and his years spent in Florida,” said SMP spokesperson Von Walker. “Rogers has repeatedly failed to deliver for the people of Michigan. Come November, Michigan voters will elect Rep. Elissa Slotkin, because they know she will be a leader who truly stands up for Michigan’s future and fights for their rights and protections.”
