What Texans Are Reading After Last Night’s Debate
In last night’s Texas Senate debate, Texans were reminded about Ted Cruz’s extremism on abortion, IVF, the January 6th insurrection, and his politicization of the border.
In an election that couldn’t be more competitive Cruz, who has shown little interest in governing since first elected, he was unable to tout any concrete accomplishments, and resorted to lie after lie throughout the debate.
Calling out Cruz’s “Hail Mary” attempt to pretend to moderate, Colin Allred delivered a strong performance highlighting the clear contrast between the two candidates.
In case you didn’t tune in – and saved yourself from listening to Cruz yell for an hour – read below for some highlights:
From NBC News on Allred’s message:
Allred used his opening remarks to call himself “the most bipartisan Texan in Congress” and said he’s “the exact opposite of Sen. Cruz, the most extreme senator,” who he said is “only focused on himself.”
Allred said Cruz has sought to “transition” his image from a radical to a reasonable senator for the election while also seeking to press his advantages on health care and abortion. He vowed to support legislation that would restore the rights of Roe v. Wade.
From Politico on Cruz dodging questions on abortion:
Sen. Ted Cruz repeatedly would not say whether he supports allowing abortion in the cases of incest or rape during what is likely to be the only debate between the Texas Republican and his Democratic opponent, Rep. Colin Allred.
From HuffPost on Cruz dodging questions on abortion:
Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) repeatedly avoided giving a direct answer to questions about his position on abortion rights during a debate with Rep. Colin Allred, the Democrat hoping to spoil his bid for a third term.
From Texas Tribune on Allred’s pushback on Cruz’s “pro-life” label:
Allred has leaned into the state abortion ban in the homestretch of the election, running ads that highlight the stories of women who were forced to leave the state after being denied emergency medical care for pregnancy complications. He brought up the issue again Tuesday evening, disputing Cruz’s characterization of himself as “pro-life.”
“You’re not pro-life,” Allred said, turning to address Cruz. “It’s not pro-life to deny women care so long that they can’t have children anymore. It’s not pro-life to force a victim of rape to carry their rapist’s baby. … Understand that when Ted Cruz says he’s pro-life, he doesn’t mean yours.”
From Houston Chronicle on Allred immigration offensive:
Allred slammed Cruz for opposing a bipartisan bill earlier this year that included funding to hire new Border Patrol agents and asylum officers and would have overhauled the asylum system by giving the president new powers to turn away migrants.
From Dallas Morning News on Cruz’s pivot away from pardon January 6 rioters:
Asked if he supports former President Donald Trump’s stated plan to pardon Jan. 6, 2021, rioters at the U.S. Capitol, Cruz said anyone who committed violent acts should be prosecuted, then pivoted to attacking Allred on crime.
